New Honda Safety Features in Joplin, MO

“Zero human error” is a new mantra that Honda has adopted. It’s no secret that the long-acclaimed automaker makes some of the safest cars on the road.

Where will the road take them (and us)? Here’s how Honda is going above and beyond to make driving safer than ever—for everyone, everywhere.

Honda Sensing: The Current Gold Standard

It all starts with the current Honda Sensing advanced driving assistance system (ADAS). This revolutionary system of exterior cameras and sensors is the launchpad of Honda’s effort to eliminate collisions and deaths entirely by 2050.

This system works to warn drivers in a number of ways:

  • Forward Collision Warning - Provides audio/visual alerts to drivers when frontal danger is detected, and also implements automatic braking if action is not taken, to reduce damage in case of an accident.
  • Road Departure Mitigation - Uses the monocular cameras to sense danger in the front and back, and implements corrective steering to keep you in your lane and off the curb.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control - Allows you to set your preferred speed as usual, and also lets you set distance from the vehicle in front of you. (As a bonus benefit, this feature can potentially save you money on Accord brake pads!)
  • Collision Mitigation Braking System - Applies the brakes when the system detects an incoming collision.
  • Lane Keeping Assist System - Automatically adjusts the steering to ensure you stay centered in your lane.
  • Traffic Sign Recognition - A small camera is used to notify you of posted speed limits, which may also be projected through your available head-up display.

The Honda Sensing suite is standard in most new Honda models currently in production, including the especially impressive, award-winning 2022 Civic. Additional Honda technology and safety features include LaneWatch, Blind Spot Information System, Cross Traffic Monitor, Auto High-Beams, and available rain-sensing wipers.

Cheers to the Future

Honda has been putting its best brains to work, and they’re excited to unveil new forms of smart technology currently in development.

Honda Sensing 360

The 360 technology is Honda’s first push toward the stated goal of cutting traffic fatalities in half by the end of the decade. It works by enhancing many of the features of the already implemented Honda Sensing suite and ADAS, like its front and rear cameras and sensors.

In addition, Honda plans to add millimeter wave-radar cameras around the exterior of the car, effectively eliminating blind spots to both vehicles and pedestrians. This technology has already been tested out in other parts of the world, and Honda plans to make it a standard feature in all U.S. models by 2030. By then, Honda will be making some of the safest cars for families.

Intelligent Driver-Assistive Technology

The Honda research and development team has been looking at everything from artificial intelligence to the human brain to fMRI-assisted studies. This represents their push to be at the forefront of introducing America’s first truly intelligent vehicles.

With this technology, AI will utilize the Honda Sensing 360 technology to provide assistance via 3D audio and risk indicators, which will alert drivers to potential dangers.

AI will also store real-time data and use it to provide information based on traffic conditions and even the driver’s own behavior. Technologies will include cognitive and attentiveness assist, like biofeedback stimulus, to combat drowsiness or distracted driving. Sounds futuristic, doesn’t it?

Safe and Sound Network Technology

Honda is embracing our age of connectivity by going further than just installing more safety features in their vehicles. The Honda mission for the future is to introduce a “cooperative safety society,” in which drivers are connected using a server that contains real-time data from smartphones, traffic cameras, and cars themselves. This effectively means Honda vehicles will read the road ahead of time, using data collected from multiple sources, to give information on the best routes to avoid unforeseen issues, including collisions.

The vehicle will be able to assess the environment and, using the 3D audio and risk indicators, intuitively suggest the best course of action via a “cooperative risk human-machine interface.” This doesn’t just apply to drivers—motorcycle riders and pedestrians benefit as well.

To put it in layman’s terms, Honda vehicles will be part of an enormous virtual landscape, not unlike the scenario in Ready Player One; except Honda’s will actually be good. (Oh! Sick burn!)

Safety is Paramount

Honda is investing in a revolutionary idea: The best way to fix an accident is to never let it happen in the first place. Through innovation and cooperation, Honda believes we can eliminate road dangers in the near future, and we agree.
