Anyone shopping for a subcompact SUV will be met by a flood of options, including the 2023 HR-V and CX-30. Each comes with its own pluses and minuses, but when you boil it all down to versatility and practicality, only one of these small crossovers is really worth its weight in brass tacks.

Let's see how the newly redesigned Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-30 compare where it matters most: Space, flexibility and price.

Space: The 10-ft3 Frontier

Best Small SUV 2023.jpg

If roominess is a factor—and it likely is—in your purchasing decision, the best small SUV between these two is undoubtedly the 2023 HR-V.

In the very back, HR-V's cargo volume comes in at 24.4 cubic feet; fold the rear seat down flat, and you're welcomed by an expansive 55.1-cubic-foot cabin that can hold a weekend camping trip's worth of gear. Very few subcompact crossovers can compete with HR-V in the cargo volume category, and that list does not include the CX-30.

Mazda's smallest SUV has a lot going for it—CX-30 does have a more vivacious engine—but one thing it really lacks is storage space. With the 2nd-row seats up, CX-30 only grants 20.2 cubic feet of space, which expands to just 45.2 cu-ft once those seats are put down. If our math is correct, that's a nearly 10-cube difference. If you like having 22% less space for your things, by all means, try living with the CX-30 for a few years. (We think you'll be back to the research table before then.)

Additionally, the new HR-V has more passenger volume, legroom, front headroom, and shoulder room. Sure, when you compare the HR-V to the CR-V or any other Honda SUV, it's the smallest. But looking at it next to the Mazda, HR-V is definitely the SUV with the most space.

2023 Honda HR-V   2023 Mazda CX-30
24.4 cu ft/55.1 cu ft Cargo Volume (rear/max) 20.2 cu ft/45.2 cu ft
98.7 cu ft Passenger Volume 94.1 cu ft
41.9 in/37.7 in Legroom (front/rear) 41.7 in/36.3 in
39.4 in Headroom (front) 38.1 in
56.6 in/55.2 in Shoulder Room (front/rear) 55.6 in/53.6 in

MSRP: Which One's Cheaper to Buy?

For the purists who seek the bare minimum when purchasing a vehicle, both base trims (HR-V LX and CX-30 2.5S) are priced attractively; either can be grabbed for under $24,000 MSRP, though the HR-V is approximately $700 more expensive than the Mazda. (Of course, when you calculate the extra space, Honda's subcompact SUV is a better value.)

Move up the trim offerings, however, and it's easy to see that the Honda HR-V is far and away the smarter buy.

The range-topping HR-V EX-L model comes with a starting price of $27,450, and that includes an 8-speaker audio system, heated front leather seats, a 9-inch touchscreen, an 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and dual-zone climate—all of which are included in the comparably equipped Mazda CX-30 2.5 S Premium model.

Did we mention that the CX-30 2.5 S Premium also costs over $3,500 more than the HR-V EX-L? Choosing the CX-30 would set you back that much more, and you'd also lose out on some features that come with the HR-V EX-L, such as a wireless phone charger and Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, to name a few.
