If you've driven your leased Honda for two or three years, and the terms of the lease agreement are coming to an end, it's time to prepare yourself for the end-of-lease return process. But what are your options after your vehicle lease expires? You can exchange the vehicle for a new lease, purchase your leased Honda, or simply return it to any Honda dealership.

Of course, there’s more to consider when it comes time to end your vehicle lease. The following are timelines and key points to consider as you get ready to return your lease to Roper Honda (or a Honda dealer near you).

1. Contact Honda Lease Maturity Center

Honda recommends contacting the Maturity Center at 1-800-340-4080 two to three months prior to the end of your lease. You’ll be able to discuss vehicle condition expectations, the Excessive Wear-and-Use or Damage Waiver, and the particulars of scheduling the inspection appointment.

2. Prepare for the Inspection

Schedule the inspection with your Honda dealer at least one week prior to the end of your lease. Come prepared with the following items:
  • Cleaned vehicle interior and exterior (however, detailing is not required)
  • All vehicle keys
  • All documents, including manuals and maintenance or service records
  • All original accessories
  • Additional, aftermarket items removed from the vehicle, such as child car seats

3. Vehicle Inspection

The following are general specifications for returning your leased vehicle:
  • Mileage: The yearly mileage on a typical lease is 12,000, but you may opt for a special per-mile payment plan. If you exceed your plan's allowable mileage, however, you will be charged for any overage at the end of the lease.
  • Wear: As stated above, you have wear-and-use waiver options; however, it's best to prepare yourself for what exceeds the usual and customary.
    • Interior: Any cuts, stains, burns, or tears exceeding ½".
    • Exterior: Bumper or molding damage in excess of 2"; punctures; missing or broken parts; excessive sand marks greater than 2"; windshield damage greater than ½"; lights and turn signal lens punctures or scratches larger than 2"; tires with a tread depth less than 1/8" or with damaged sidewalls; damaged or mismatched wheels; any damage to the vehicle's structure.
  • Mechanical: You’ll be charged for any non-operational part or replacement component that is deemed substandard and non-stock.
  • Customizations: Returning the vehicle in any altered state from its original condition qualifies as excessive wear or damage; this includes window tinting, suspension modifications, paint changes, and engine adaptations.
  • Repairs: An advantage to providing yourself ample time for the inspection prior to the end-of-lease deadline is that you allow enough time to get the appropriate repair estimates and make the required repairs before returning the vehicle. With the repair estimates in hand, you may also opt to save the trouble and simply pay the repair costs attached to your final lease bill.
Honda Leadership Lease generally includes a $500 Excessive Wear and Use or Damage waiver; however; there are other considerations that may qualify you to have other fees waived.

The terms of your lease contract may vary, but generally speaking, if you lease or purchase another Honda within 30 days of returning your leased vehicle, you may qualify for additional incentives. The maximum waiver amount for returning Honda lessees is $1,000.
