As two of the best-selling cars on the market, the 2017 Accord and Camry deserve lots of credit for the recent surge in sedan sales. Having wrestled away the spotlight from crossovers, both of these midsize cars are now battling each other for the right to be named the best of the best. In this Accord vs. Camry comparison, we’ll figure out which of these sedans is a breakout star, and which is a second-place finisher.

Full of Style
Although we’ve been taught never to judge books by their covers, sometimes exceptions must be considered. While the 2017 Camry is a perfectly inoffensive midsize sedan, its exterior styling lacks a certain je ne sais quoi. Of note is the Camry’s distracting front grille; inspired perhaps by Hungry Hungry Hippos, it looks as if it’s perpetually ready to devour road debris. Opt for a Camry in Blizzard Pearl paint, and that grille transforms into an uninviting black hole. Otherwise, the new Camry looks like a typical melodrama.
On the other end of the stylish spectrum is the 2017 Honda Accord. Available in seven incredible trims, as well as a handful of hybrid models, the Accord balances classy modernity and traditionally classic perfectly. Its contoured hood swoops and blends into the front end, which is enveloped by bright LED headlights. The doors are large, pillars minimal, and rear end anything but unassuming thanks to brilliant dual exhausts.

Fuel Economy & Performance
For most car shoppers at Roper Honda, the standard 2.4L inline-4 should work well when paired with Honda’s CVT. Offering up to 189 horsepower, this turbocharged engine is extraordinarily responsive during gear shifts. It owes thanks to what Honda engineers have called G-Design logic, a system that locks into the next gear quicker than even some standard automatic transmissions. With both the I4 and CVT, the Accord can pull up to 36 mpg on the highway and 26 in the city; the Camry, on the other hand, only nets 24 city/33 highway mpg.
An upgraded 3.5L V6 option is also available on select Accord trims. It’s as strong as its rivals, producing 278 horsepower, while also being an efficient fuel-sipping engine (thanks to its two-engine shut-down system).
The 2017 Camry has done little to update its lineup of engines. In most trims, you’ll find an outdated and lackluster 4-cylinder that produces an equally lackluster 178 horsepower. Not exactly the epitome of excitement, we know. Opt for a Camry XLE or XSE, and you can choose a 3.5L V6 that makes 268 hp—what you can’t choose is the cost with which it is paired. Expect to pay more for a less-thrilling V6-equipped Camry XSE than you would for an Accord EX-L.
Full Lineup of Safety Features
Both the 2017 Camry and Accord have earned Top Safety Pick+ awards by the IIHS and five-star overall ratings from the NHTSA, but it’s Honda’s midsize king that is leading the pack. Having expanded its Honda Sensing suite throughout the roster, the 2017 Accord now offers a few safety features that the Camry can’t.
- Adaptive Cruise Control – Set your speed and let the Accord do all the work to maintain it, even if you’re stuck in the slow lane. This is available on the base LX Accord, but you’d have to upgrade to the Camry XLE trim to get it.
- Parking Assist – Available on the LX Accord, this system helps you park like a pro. It’s not available on any Camry model.
- Lane-Departure Warning – Optional on the Accord LX, this system is unavailable on the Camry unless you pay a premium for the XLE or XSE.

With the Accord, you’ll also find safety systems like LaneWatch, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and road-departure mitigation. Such features are either not available or restricted to the Camry’s top trims.
Although close behind the Accord in terms of safety scores, the 2017 Toyota Camry has earned one demerit thus far: A recall on airbags.
