What Did Honda Unveil at the 2018 NAIAS Auto Show?

The 2018 NAIAS (North American International Auto Show) may be over, but its impact on the industry continues. Besides its reputation for exhibiting the most brilliant automotive creations in the world, January's event raised $5.1 million dollars for southeastern Michigan children's charities. (Fun fact: The NAIAS Charity Preview event is reputed to be the largest single-night fundraiser in the world.)

The 2018 NAIAS was certainly an event to remember—especially for Honda fans. Here’s a recap of all that Honda showed off the Detroit Auto Show this year.

The Accord is the Fairest of Them All

On January 16, the 2018 Honda Accord was named the North American Car of the Year. It’s the third year in a row that Honda earned the award (the 2017 Ridgeline was last year’s proud winner, while the Civic brought home the award for 2016).

Henio Arcangeli, a senior VP of Honda's automotive division, accepted the award on Honda's behalf. During his acceptance speech, Arcangeli acknowledged his company's renown for superior craftsmanship, insisting that the award will spur continued excellence in future offerings.

To date, 13 million Accords have been sold in the United States, underlining the brand's reputation for quality and durability. The 2018 Accord's exciting new features include:

  • High-torque VTEC® 1.5L and 2.0L turbocharged engines. The 1.5L puts out at 192 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque, while the 2.0L manufactures 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque.
  • Five revolutionary trims (LXEXEX-LAccord Sport, or Accord Touring) matched with either 1.5L, 2.0L, or hybrid engines.
  • Honda's third-generation two-motor hybrid powertrain, which effortlessly propels the Accord over 600 fuel-efficient miles.
  • Classic Honda Sensing safety package with Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™), Driver Awareness Monitor, Multi-View Rear Camera, Traffic Sign Recognition (a new driver-assistance feature), and Road Departure Mitigation.
  • The world's first 10-speed automatic transmission for a front-drive car.
  • A 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, and Siri Eyes Free.
  • Optional "wow" features like a moon-roof, 8-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Wi-Fi hotspot.

Unveiling the 2019 Honda Insight Sedan Prototype

This Insight prototype stole the show on January 15 and is slated to join the 2018 Accord Hybrid and Clarity Plug-in Hybrid variants in late 2018. The 2019 Insight has an anticipated 50 mpg rating, making it one of the most fuel-efficient sedans in its segment.

Here are the most stunning features of the 2019 Honda Insight:

  • A 1.5L Atkinson cycle powertrain (similar to the Clarity), which combines a shortened intake valve stroke with a full-length expansion stroke. The larger expansion ratio dwarfs the compression ratio, making the 2019 Insight the most fuel efficient of Honda's hybrid offerings.
  • The powertrain is matched with two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery. For the first time, the third-generation two-motor system will facilitate sustained electric mobility.
  • Premium 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with customizable app tiles, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, and Wi-Fi system updates.
  • Powerful Honda Sensing Safety package that includes Adaptive Cruise Control and Collision Mitigation Braking System.

All hybrid Honda vehicles, including the upcoming Insight, may still qualify for up to $7,500 in federal tax credits. Hop on that train!
