The 2018 Honda Accord: Updates, News & Release Date

While the mid-size sedan market has cooled off in recent years as automakers battle to build the newest, hottest crossover SUV, Honda has continued to do what it does best: Innovate. Now in its 10th iconic generation, the newly redesigned Honda Accord is setting its sights on reclaiming the “family car” market from small SUVs and all other rivals. Have you found yourself asking, "When is the 2018 Accord coming out?"  If so, read on to see what this all-new Accord offers, and when it’ll find its way onto our Joplin car dealership lot.

Three New Engines

Honda announced that the new Accord will come with three power plants.

A 1.5L turbo-four will be standard in base Accord trims. It will generate 192 HP and 192 lb.-ft. of torque. In Accord Sport trims, this engine can be mated to a six-speed manual; in all other trims, it’ll be paired with Honda’s incredible CVT.

The 2.0L turbo-four is married to a 10-speed automatic and produces 252 HP. Like the 1.5L engine, this larger motor—it’s an adaptation of the record-setting Civic Type R’s engine—can also be matched with the Accord Sport and a manual transmission. According to Jeff Conrad, Sr. VP of American Honda Motor Co., the 10-speed automatic is the first of its kind for a front-wheel-drive car, and the engine’s 273 lb.-ft. torque is the highest output ever for the Accord. Peak torque is even available at 1500 rpm, which is a remarkable feat considering the old Accord’s V6 needed 4900 rpm to push the needle north.

The third engine (a 2.0L Atkinson inline-four) will be equipped in the Accord Hybrid.

Interior Comfort

Accords have never lacked cabin comfort, and the 2018 model is no exception.

The 2018 Accord is about as long and wide as its predecessor—it is .4 inches shorter and .4 inches wider—but passenger volume increases by 2.5 cubic feet (106 cu. ft. total). Rear legroom stretches an additional 2 inches, and trunk space goes from 16 to 17 cubic feet, both of which are at the top of its class.

Front seats are a bit taller and wider than those in the 2017 Accord and can be heated and ventilated depending on trim. A smaller contoured steering wheel aids in visibility, as do thinner A-pillars.

A reimagined digital instrumentation cluster is bright and dynamic, thanks to a brand-new heads-up display that projects key information within a driver’s line of sight. Also new is an instrument panel that’s sectioned into threes and features soft-touch materials, a robust 8-inch display screen, and knobs – yay! – that adjust audio volume and tune stations. Upgrade to the 2018 Accord Touring, and you’ll be rewarded with a 10-speaker, 450W audio system to give your favorite tunes and podcasts a boost.

Honda engineers also bolstered built-in tech to offer a “more advanced connected-car experience.” 4G LTE Wi-Fi has been improved. The new touchscreen has an intuitive interface and menu. The process to connect and set up Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ has even been simplified, as has Bluetooth phone pairing.
